Dictionary of the United States Congress
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1864. First Edition . Cloth, Gilt. Very Good. 9 1/4" Tall. 556 Pp. Biographical Directory With Much Additional Information In Appendices At End, Including The Organization Of The Executive Branch, With Lists Of Many Officials Including Departmental Secretaries, Electors, Governors, Etc. The First Of Many Successive Directories To The Present, Issued About Every Decade In The Twentieth Century, And The Model For Later Directories. Remarkable For The Minimal Information Which Appears To Have Been Available To Lanman, And For Much Inaccuracy About Congressmen And Senators, Particularly In The Period Circa 1825 To 1860, Indicating That Little Was Actually Known About Those Elected Officials, And That Original Sources Were Not Consulted Nor Were Interviews Conducted With Persons With Accurate First-Hand Information (An Unfortunate Indication Of The Quality Of Information Acceptable To Congress).
