The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection,
London: John Murray,, 1875. or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. Sixth edition, with Additions and Corrections. Octavo. Original green cloth, gilt lettered spine, frame blocked in blind to covers, brown coated endpapers. One folding diagram. Ownership inscription to half-title, another to title page. Bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine rolled, bumps and slight wear to extremities and joints, a little fraying to spine ends, rear inner hinge cracked but holding; a very good copy. Sixth edition, fifteenth thousand. The sixth edition (eleventh thousand) was first issued in 1872, and was "extensively revised [by Darwin] and contains a new chapter, VII. This was inserted to confute the views of the Roman Catholic biologist St George Mivart" (Freeman). The Origin is, of course, Darwin's best known work and "certainly the most important biological book ever written" (Freeman).
