1652 - "in the Name . of the Councell of State appoynted by Authority of Parliament", to 'Gentlemen', the Commissioners of the Navy, saying that previously they had ordered the ship the "Armes of Medenblick to goe to the Coast of Guinny in consort with two Men of War" and "to be set out by the Guinny Company", but she not being sufficiently ready, they have appointed "the Prize Ship . Prince William . four hundred Tunne . four & thirty Guns . in her stead", which the Commissioners are to have "speedily fitted . for that service", signed also by 'Jo: Thurloe Cler[ke] of the Councell', 1 side 13" x 9", papered seal of the Council of State bearing the Commonwealth arms (St George's Cross and the Irish Harp) and summary on conjugate leaf, Whitehall, 21st October top and side edges frayed affecting ends of lines, wider defect in blank portion at end of text, almost all supplied by old mending with text in pencil where necessary, but all can be made out The Council of State of 41 members, 9 to make a quorum, was set up on 13th February 1648/1649, after the King's execution, to direct the Navy and the Militia, to put down Royalists and reduce Ireland, and to deal with foreign states. The President of the Council served for a month. John Thurloe, (1616-1668, later M.P. for Ely and for Cambridge University and a member of the Council), was put in charge of the postal department and became Cromwell's 'spymaster'. He employed the famous mathematician John Wallis, 1616-1703, to decipher coded letters. Medemblik in North Holland is a fine old port on the west side of the Zuider Zee and the former capital of West Friesland. Many such prizes were taken from the Dutch in 1652 under the Navigation Act of 1651, which restricted trade with the colonies to British ships. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
