A Collection of Forty-Eight Views of Noblemens and Gentlemens Seats
London: John & Joseph Boydell, 1806 Towns, Castles, Churches, Monasteries and Romantic Places in North and South Wales. In contemporary red leather with lots of decorative blind and gilt tooling, corners and edges a little bumped and worn. Spine has raised bands, gilt title and tooling, small red mark poss from removed label at base. Internally, purple endpapers, has the attractive French bookplate of MT, 1899. Some browning and offsetting, as is usual, 48 B&W plates, dated 1792, 95, 1806 and some not dated, each with a leaf of descriptive text, followed by an Index of names and a list of Subjects - where situated and by whom painted etc. All in all a great looking book! Colt Hoare, had a particular fondness for Wales, as did many of his fellow antiquaries, and he made a significant contribution to its travel literature with his translation of Gerald of Wales, published as Giraldus de Barri, Itinerary of Archbishop Baldwin through Wales AD 1188 (1806). He provided the illustrations for William Coxe's Historical Tour of Monmouthshire (1801) and did the same for his friend Roger Fenton in his Historical Tour through Pembrokeshire (1811).
