J.Pinkerton - London - - 69.5 x 50 - Original colour - A large-scale and attractive map of the western/central Pacific with the many recently discovered island groups of the area including Hawaii and the Sandwich Islands, Polynesia from the Caroline and Marianne Islands to the Society and Marquesa groups, with "Feejee" central, and the north east coast of Australia from Carpentaria to Shoal Bay. John Pinkerton was not known for a large output of cartographic work, but this map appeared in his largest and most impressive production, "The Modern Atlas". This was first issued in parts to subscribers, this plate in 1813, and finally as a complete publication in 1815. Finely engraved by Samuel Neele, this detailed map has a precise and distinctive style typifying early nineteenth-century cartography with its emphasis on scientific accuracy as opposed to earlier more artistic interpretation.
