(incl. frontis) Contemporary 3/4 calf, with original marbled boards. Original end papers with some spotting and label removed. Leather spine with gilt type and at head of title: The Library of Entertaining Knowledge "28" in the middle and title at the bottom. Edges somewhat rubbed. Internally some foxing at times a little bit heavy. Some offset facing the plates, and some text pages. Otherwise, a very good and attractive copy of an important book. , Composed of letters written by the author to her mother and friends in England, the Backwoods includes much useful and interesting information on home-making under pioneer conditions, pioneer recipes for making maple sugar, vinegar, &c. The appendix added by the publisher to "render this Work more practical value to persons desiring to emigrate" consists of: The Number of Sales and Grants of Crown Lands, Clergy Reserves, Conditions, &c; Information for Emigrants; Number of Emigrants Arrives; Extracts from papers Issued by Government Emigration Agents, &c.; Abstract of the American Passengers' Act of Session 1835; Transfer of Capital; Canadian Currency; Canada Company; and British American Land Company. Mrs. Traill, who emigrated to Canada with her husband, a lieutenant in the 21st Fusiliers, also gives an account of her journey and settlement near Rice Lake, Upper Canada, August 1832-May 1835.
