The Yankee Whaler
Bos. & NY., 1926. 4to. (xvi,) 379 pp. Color and b/w plates, ills. This is #52 of 156 copies, numbered and signed, and with an original pen and ink sketch by Ashley. Profusely illustrated, partially in color. “Probably the best pictorial record of American whaling which can be published.” - Hohman. Ashley went on a whaling voyage himself, aboard the Sunbeam, of New Bedford, and this volume includes an account of the voyage. Ashley was a friend of N. C. Wyeth, and a member of Howard Pyle’s Brandywine school. Forster 160. Scarce in this edition, and a very nice copy. Bound in original quarter calf, blue boards, pictorial endpapers. Just a touch of sunning to spine ends, else a fine, bright copy in all respects, in worn illustrated slipcase.
