The Beauties of Shakespeare; Selected from his Plays and Poems
Printed for G. Kearsley 1783 - with engraved title-page with a circular vignette portrait with the profile of Garrick to the left, gazing on the Master, pp. xxiii, 36, 49-235, 248-275 (text continuous despite the gaps in pagination), 8vo, uncut in contemporary half calf, rather rubbed but solid enough, 2 of the calf corners missing, printed label iside front cover of 'Ledger's Circulating Library, Dovor' (i.e. Dover), with a list of the goods and services available. First edition of this selection, a scarce 'Beauties', ESTC recording just 3 copies - BL, Cambridge, Folger. A different selection from that compiled by William Dodd, indeed a rival to Dodd; preceded by a Life. 'Price Half a Crown Sewed' at foot of title-page. The contemporary binding was perhaps the cheapest available: a pleasantly humble volume. Ledger's Albion library opened in 1782, and this seems to be the 298th book acquired for it. (Jaggard p. 562; ESTC T222662)
