Flash Spencer - No. 2
1943. Very Good. Loose quarto sheets brad bound into blank manilla folder. 42pp., illustrated rectos only. Very good with folder toned with a nick at the foredge and the first interior sheets with some rubbing and a tiny tear. A delightful and ambitious hand drawn comic by Russ Smith in the style of the Golden Age comic books of the day. A header on each page reads "Army-Navy" suggesting Smith may have been an soldier but this is only speculation. Likely inspired by the matinee adventures of Flash Gordon, this comic follows Flash Spencer, "Captain of the Space Patrol," taking on an alien scouting party headquartered in a hidden mountain base. Spencer defeats enemy ships, infiltrates the base, and faces down a monstrous beast while his men rush to his aid. Each page is hand drawn and inked, then embellished with color pencils. While not a professional artist, Smith's illustrations express a charming enthusiasm and a flair for page layout with a use of large and small panels at a time when many commercial comics stuck to six and eight panel grids. Only the first page (or "cover") is left somewhat unfinished with some pencil background details not inked and only the hero's tunic colored. Given the level of work that went into this issue, we strongly suspect there was indeed a first issue and the final panel teaser of the next issue, "The Invasion of Earth," was a serious pursuit. Obviously unique.
