Harlem (Haarlem)
Hand coloured copperplate engraving of the Dutch city of Haarlem, as seen from above. With explanatory title (Har-lem ) in the upper rightcorner, above the city crest. In a cartouche in the bottom left corner: 'Harlemum siue Her:lemum vrbs Hollan:diae situ, et aedisiciorum pulchritudine perameana.'. ca. 1582.Overall size: 29,5 x 37,5 cm; plate size: 26,8 x 34 cm. Good/fair state. Some age related discolouration and light damp stains. Roughly coloured. The top of the print is damaged due to the fact that the right city crest of the print got stuck to the right while folding. Handlaid paper pasted to contemporary paper This print originates from 'Lodovico Guicciardini, Descrittione di tutti i Paesi bassi (...), Antwerpen, Plantijn, 1582'. This was an influential account of the history and the arts of the Low Countries, accompanied by city maps by various leading engravers. Deys 2001.
