Original green cloth with gilt lettering and gilt and black decorations, frontispiece with tissue guard, black and white illustrations and maps. A first American printing in excellent condition. This edition not in Ferguson. Muir, 6824. Originally published in 1871 under the title 'A Boy's Voyage Round the World.' The vignettes used as chapter-headings include views of Melbourne and Sydney as well as Auckland, Honolulu and Niagara. Smiles in the preface indicates that he edited his youngest son's narrative of his trip to Victoria Australia where he spent some 18 months before going to North America via Auckland and Honolulu. Considered by some to be the only account of Australian travel by a juvenile from the colonial era. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
