Devender in oberijssel (Deventer)
Hand coloured copperplate etching/engraving of the Dutch city of Tiel. Accompanied by the German motto 'Das Ja wort macht den Kauff', meaning 'The yes word makes the purchase'. Further description in Latin and German on the bottom of the print. The motto is pictured in front of the city by a nobleman asking a woman for her hand. ca. 1640.Overall size: 14,7 x 19,2 cm; plate size: 9,4 x 14,7 cm. Very good state. Reinforced above a fold in the upper corners. Handlaid paper. Print number E39 originates from 'Daniel Meisner, Sciographia Cosmica (...), Nürnberg, P. Fürst, 1638-1642'. After Meisner's Thesaurus Philo-politicus (...), 1623-1632. This series of 830 emblematic prints contained eighty prints concerning Dutch and Belgian cities.(Meissner)
