Thomas Nelson & Sons, London - 16mo, 10.5 x 16cm, i ¿ x, 11 - 480. nd. [1908 but with 1900 preface date]. Publisher's original blue cloth binding with ornate floral blocking and publisher's monogram to the upper board, and gilt titles to the spine. Top edge gilt. White endpapers blocked in light blue with a framing device around the publisher's monogram. The boards are very good overall, small bumps to top fore edge corners, light rubbing to bottom fore edge corners, the board of one just exposed. There is a 1.5mm diameter rust dot just over half way down near the fore edge and very light soiling in the bottom section of floral blocking. The rear board has a small ink mark at the top edge and a couple of minor marks in addition (see image). Light shelf wear to the spine foot and surprisingly bright gilt titles and blocking to the spine. Internally, there is a previous owner name and address (R Hind Oct. 15th 1908) and acid migration toning to the front free endpaper. Complete with rare Conan Doyle frontispiece. Conan Doyle refused to pass this, the first issue of the second English edition, for publication because it reprinted the first edition without any of the later revisions (hence a return to the preface date of 1900), it had no map, and he disliked the "Sir" Arthur Conan Doyle spine title. His strongest objection was to the use of his portrait as frontispiece, supplanting that of Lord Roberts used in all impressions of the first edition. Although a number of copies had been bound and dispatched, distribution was subsequently halted and the edition destroyed. A very scarce edition. If you would like any further information or images, please do not hesitate to ask. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
