D. Appleton and Company, New York, London 1920 - Octavo, pp. [1-6] 1-334 [335] [336-338: blank], original blue decorative cloth, front panel stamped in blind and black, spine panel stamped in black. First edition. First printing with code "(1)" on page [335]. "Occult romance about a young woman wooed by two young men, one of whom uses psychic means to influence her emotions, controlling her dreams, inducing visions, eventually manipulating her into marrying him even though she realizes she loves the other man. Her husband, jealous of this rival, tries to murder him through astral projection. The novel draws on New England's background of mysticism and utopianism for its story, whose setting alternates between New York City and a resort town in coastal Maine. Although practically unknown, this is a work of fine craftsmanship with narrative force, rounded characterizations, vivid details, and a deep awareness of the swirling currents of occult fashions in the West at the turn of the century. Indeed, the modes of thought it illuminates are still very much with us today." - Robert Eldridge. Bleiler (1978), p. 170. Reginald 12419. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 5-522. Just a touch of rubbing at spine ends, a fine copy in very good pictorial dust jacket with some rubbing to front panel and a small chip from the lower spine end. (#148136) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
