Peter Pan and Wendy
London: Hodder and Stoughton, n.d., [c.1930].. FIRST HUDSON ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Published for Boots Pure Drug Co. Quarto. pp. 272. With 21 full-page colour illustrations and many more in-text or to margins. Elegantly hand-bound in half dark blue oasis morocco leather, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands, cloth sides, publisher's original cloth bound in at rear. Occasional thumbing. Near fine, in an attractive recent leather binding. Hudson illustrated just two carefully chosen classic fantasy books, namely J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan and Wendy and Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures In Wonderland. Alice was printed in London in 1922, with Peter Pan following in 1930. Her illustrations, like Arthur Rackham's, were both full in colour or simpler silhouettes, and although very little is known of the artist, she was nevertheless a contemporary of Mable Lucy Atwell, Lucy Kemp Welsh and Virginia Sterrett during the golden age of Edwardian gift books. Her modest but exquisite output remains highly desirable today.
