The Aphorisms of Hippocrates, and the Sentences of Celsus, with Explanations and References to the most considerable Writers in Physick and Philosophy both Ancient and Modern
London - R. Wilkin, F. and F. Bonwick 1735 - A fascinating and early investigation into the philosophy and practises of Hippocrates and Celsus. Second edition. To which are added Aphorisms Upon several Distempers, not well distinguished by the Ancients. Featuring one of the original two, engraved plate of Celsus, by M. V. Grucht, and decorative head and tail pieces, with illuminated capitals. Hippocrates was an ancient Greek physician of the Age of Pericles, and is considered one of the most outstanding figures in the history of medicine. He is referred to as the father of Western medicine in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field as the founder of the Hippocratic School of Medicine. This intellectual school revolutionised medicine in ancient Greece, establishing it as a discipline distinct from other fields that it had traditionally been associated with (notably theurgy and philosophy), thus establishing medicine as a profession. With printed transcriptsfrom victorian surgeons and physicians loosely inserted, discussing the nowbanned remedy, Bromidia. Edited and compiled by Sir Conrad Sprengell, M. D. member of the College of Physicians, and fellow of the Royal Society. Condition: With original calf binding, but with detached boards, making it disbound though with boards present. Externally, both boards are detached, and spine is cracked with loss to spine label. Boards are a trifle rubbed with wear to extremities. Internally, binding has failed in places, due to cracked spine, although mostly firmly bound to the text block edge. Bright but with instances of foxing throughout, and instances of past worming. Copperplate ink annotated notes to pages 412 through to 414. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall: FAIR. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
