New York : D. Appleton and Company, 1881. First edition. - 1881 1ed Rise & Fall of Confederacy Jefferson Davis SLAVERY Civil War MAPS CSA I worked night and day for twelve years to prevent the war, but I could not. The North was mad and blind, would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came.” – Jefferson Davis An important book on the history of the Confederate government before, during, and after the Civil War, written by Jefferson Davis. According to Nevins, this book contains “an argumentative dissertation on secession and states’ rights; however, it conceals more than it reveals of the inner history of the Confederacy.” It includes portraits of famous Union and Confederate generals, as well as important political leaders. Davis provides his account and belief as to what caused the American Civil War as well as retelling many stories of military campaigns. However, the most detailed portion of the book is his description of the Confederate Constitution. He discusses the history slavery and defended its fundamental morality. According to Davis himself, “slavery enlightened blacks with the ‘arts of peace, order and civilization’ and slaves were happy and ‘contented’ with their servitude.” (Blight) Davis used this book as a platform to justify the Confederate secession from the United States. He cites presidential speeches, constitutional passages, and scholars to help support his cause.
