New York, NY: Ensign, Bridgman, & Fanning 1855 - New York, NY: Ensign, Bridgman, & Fanning, 1855. Original 19th century antique pocket map guide. Hardcover. Fine overall. Rare pocket emigrant guide having large folding color map. 16mo, 70 pages plus ads, all edges gilt, color marbled rear endpaper, original gilt-stamped black roan covers having ornate gold borders and gold pictorials of a steam locomotive and a river steamboat on front, blind-stamped rear cover. These famous guidebooks for U.S. travelers were published by New York mapmaker Humphrey Phelps, first issued in the early 1830s and revised periodically with revamped titles, imprints and updated maps. This is the most desirable state: the original LARGE FOLDING HAND-COLORED OUTLINE MAP features border portraits and state seals, and includes an inset map of Oregon, CALIFORNIA (with the area around Sacramento labeled "GOLD REGION"), and TEXAS, tipped in at the rear. The "New Map" is titled "Phelps' National Map of the United States, a Travelers' Guide. Embracing the Principal Rail Roads, Canals, Steam Boat & Stage Routes, throughout the Union." Map in exceptional condition, clean and with bright hand-coloring, having one or two small fold splits, but in untouched original condition. Incredible 162-year-old survivor. In sum, an exceedingly desirable, museum quality copy of a rare nineteenth century traveler's-emigrant guide. Just this one copy. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
