She Walks in Beauty
New York: Brentano's. 1928. Third printing, the month after the first. Contemporary ownership signature of Toledo, Ohio native Mary Lucille Buskey, slight wear at the spine ends, very good plus lacking the dustwrapper. Additionally Signed by Dawn Powell, presumably at a contemporary date: "Sincerely, Dawn Powell". A pleasing copy of the author's exceptionally uncommon second book (and in practice the first, after she repudiated her first novel Whither), a novel set in the Midwest of Sinclair Lewis, Sherwood Anderson and Edgar Lee Masters, but wittier and more ironic. Powell was prolific and well-regarded but until a fairly recent and well-deserved revival, precipitated by the Tim Page biography, mostly forgotten. For forty years she was an ornament of the New York literary world and if you read her books it's easy to see why. .
