London: Richard Bentley, 1857. London:: Richard Bentley, 1857.. 2 volumes in 1. Small 8vo. vi, [4], 300; 304 pp. Index. The second part is bound without the preliminaries [starting with signature “B”]. Original full deep green morocco, with red and black inlays, gilt-stamping, framing both upper and lower covers, raised bands, massed gilt-stamped spine, gilt title, all edges gilt; slightly rubbed. Near fine. Colorful binding. DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING, with two nautical views of: (1) “The Clipper Anglesey”; (2) “Homeward Bound”. The first scene is painted after the work of William Foster: “Print entitled ‘The Clipper Ship “Anglesey”, 1150 Tons. To Captain J. N. Thorne and The Officers of the Ship...Â’. The ship was built in London, probably by GreenÂ’s, in 1852 and for their London to Australia run. Here she flies their Green Blackwall line house flag at the main and is shown bound up-Channel off Dover. She also has a blue and white signal pennant at the mizzen, possibly in answer to a cutter yacht seen under her bows, which also flies the Green flag and a signal. There is a small British cross-Channel steamer under her stern apparently flying both the Union at the fore and French tricoleur at the main.” Â
