Abraham Lincoln Famous Nomination Photograph
1860 - Platinum print photograph, 20 1/2 x 26 1/2 inches. One of three images taken by Alexander Hesler on June 3, 1860 in Springfield, Illinois. After the war, Philadelphia photographer George B. Ayres purchased Hesler's studio and negatives. This massive print was enlarged from Hesler's negative by Ayres ca. 1897, with original blind stamp in each of the lower corners, "G. B. Ayres, Copyright 1897." Framed to 30 3/4 x 37 1/2 inches. Hesler's photograph, taken right after Lincoln became the Republican nominee for the presidency, was his favorite: "That looks better and expresses me better than any I have ever seen; if it pleases the people I am satisfied," Lincoln said. His law partner William Herndon commented that it was so "essentially Lincolnian; no other artist has ever caught it."Most prints made by Ayres were 8 x 10. The large size and spectacular condition makes this extremely rare.ReferenceOstendorf 26
