viii, 204, [2 blanks], 124 pages. Mezzotint portrait of the author, as frontispiece, 25 engraved plates, 4 engraved vignettes, and other wood-engraved text illustrations. Decorative border of title hand-coloured; also the plate of the coats of arms of some famous families of the Isle of Thanet, and some other occasional hand-colouring, all finely executed. Bound in full calf, gilt, sometime re-backed preserving the original elaborately decorated spine. Second and best edition of this pioneering history of the Isle of Thanet (the first edition, published in 1723, had many fewer pages and only nine plates). Inner hinges strengthened when re-backed; recto of frontispiece, verso of title, and last leaf, stamped, 'Musevm Britanicvm' within a lozenge;, then, 'Duplicate for sale 1769. ' Bookplates of John Cade and Sir Thomas Neame. An excellent, clean, crisp copy. The author, the Rev. John Lewis (1675-1747), was the Vicar of Minster in Thanet and an active local antiquary. The Musevm Britanicvm was the early name for the British Museum.
