ENCARNACION PRISONERS: COMPRISING AN ACCOUNT OF THE MARCH OF THE KENTUCKY CAVALRY FROM LOUISVILLE TO THE RIO GRANDE, TOGETHER WITH AN AUTHENTIC HISTORY OF THE CAPTIVITY OF THE AMERICAN PRISONERS...BY A PRISONER
Louisville, Ky, 1848. 96pp. Half antique calf and marbled boards, gilt spine title. Titlepage bit tanned, some light scattered foxing. Very good. The first of two editions of this work noted by Howes, to which he does not ascribe priority. However, as the other edition which he cites identifies the author, it is most likely that the present edition precedes it. A particularly interesting account of the campaigns of the 1st Regiment of Kentucky Cavalry, including a relation of the experiences of the several units who were captured and imprisoned by the Mexicans at Encarnacion, fifty miles south of Saltillo. The description of the Trinity, Red River and southern regions of Texas is particularly good, and appended is a list of the prisoners, as well as some correspondence relevant to the matter. A very rare work, not in Eberstadt, Decker, or the Streeter Sale. HOWES S231 ("b"). GRAFF 3714. SABIN 78306. TUTOROW 3503.
