Published as a work from the Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge. Illustrated throughout, with forty eight plates and two hundred and seven wood cuts. Appears to be the first edition of this text, with the first title page dated 1848 and the second dated 1847. Written by E G Squier the American archaeologist and newspaper editor in collaboration with Edwin H Davis. This work is regarded to be a landmark in American scientific research as it explores the prehistoric indigenous mound builders of North America. This book is an example ofthe development of early archaeology as a scientific discipline. This was the first publication in the Smithsonian Institution's first publication. Condition: In a full green cloth binding with gilt stamping to spine. Externally,generally smart with rubbing to theextremities and to the head and tail of spine. Small loss to head and tail of spine due to rubbing. Remnants of price label to top of spine. Prior owner's signature to the recto of front endpaper dated 1989. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned toedges withsome light tidemarks and spottingthroughout. Spots are heavier to the first and last few pages. Overall: GOOD..
