Fleece Press SPECIAL limited edition 2016 - A most attractive illustrated retail history of Dunbar Hay Ltd of 15 Albemarle Street, London W1. It was founded in 1936 by Cecilia Dunbar Kilburn and Athole Hay and gave opportunities for graphic artists, including Eric Ravilious, Eric Bawden and Enid Marx, to show their designs, including furniture, furnishings, ceramics, fabrics, patterns. Ravilious also designed the engraved trade card for the shop, which closed in 1940 because of WW2; the stock and retail records were later destroyed by enemy bombing. Hardback book, one of 120 SPECIAL limited editions (from a total of 270 printed), p.172, size: 9" square, red buckram spine, label pasted on spine, with red/yellow/cream decorated boards, from a design based on a fragment of silk left over from the shop. Book is fully illustrated with an attractive selection of colour plates, some tipped-in, and b&w photographs, presenting the designs, range of stock sold, and people involved in the shop's brief history. In addition to Simon Lawrence's commentary, also included is a transcript of a 1979 lecture given by Cecilia Dunbar Kilburn (by then Lady Sempill), and a memoir by her daughter Gabriel Sempill, about the history of the shop. Also contains a card portfolio containing an original copy of the Ravilious trade card, together with a piece of hand-printed organdie fabric from Enid Marx's earliest days as a textile artist (1936-40).
