His Highness Speech To The Parliament In The Painted Chamber At Their Dissolution Upon Monday the 22nd of January 1654.
Henry Hills Printer. 1654 - 36 pages, small quarto. Later (early 20th century) plain cloth binding, old plain paper wrappers (probably contemporary 17th century, bound in). The title page is grubby as is the final colophon leaf LOSS to text near gutter of pages 29/30 and again pages grubby here, probably left open and ill-used trodden on? There is an 18th century note at top of title page signed W. F. 1753 "Egregiously wicked and hypocritical". Good margins. Small quarto. 1654. * After the Regicide of Charles in 1649 Cromwell left London and retired to his country home. One of the new Parliamentarians was his brother. It became so corrupt, so tarnished and the mobs unruly and riotous he had to ride to London and closed Parliament with his loyal guards. he banished the members and this is that speech. "Published to prevent mistakes and False Copies". ** There is a lovely bookplate of John Rendel Harris; Mathematician and Quaker Theologian (possibly by A. J. Gaskin?). He was a representative of the John Rylands Library in Manchester and the Jon Hopkins Library in Baltimore where he taught mathematics. he was also a Paleographer and curator of Egyptian Papyrus with a collection he acquired whilst working in that country. and that now reside in the British Museum. He is also credited with discovering the oldest known New testament manuscript translated into Syriac and an unknown Apology of Aristede also in Syriac. he wrote several works and bequeathed his library and manuscripts at his death in 1941 to Birmingham Library although this information may be outdated and they are now in Haverford College in Pennsylvania? [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
