- Goedeke VI, p. 263, no. 25; cf. Howgego, 1800-1850, H37; Ward 1139 (French ed.); Zittel, p. 67. First and only edition of the enlarged German translation of the geological and mineralogical results of Alexander von Humboldt's journey through Asiatic Russia, including the Ural mountains, Siberia and the Altai Mountains. In 1829 Humboldt went on an expedition at the request of Tsar Nicolas of Russia, into the Asiatic regions of the Russian empire "to ascertain the immense natural resources of the empire in the interest of promoting the growth of a national industry" (Howgego). After his return Humboldt composed a series of memoires, concerning geography, volcanic geology and climatology, which were read before the Academy of Sciences of Berlin and the Institute of France in the years 1830 and 1831. From these memoires the work Fragmens de geìologie et de climatologie Asiatiques was published in 1831, also including two chapters by Julius Klaproth on the Altai Mountains and the volcanos of China, Japan and other parts of Asia. The present German translation by Julius Loewenberg adds a new introduction, two maps (although the title speaks of "einer Karte" a printed note above the imprint says "Mit zwei Karten"), a table, and several comments. With pencil annotations and underscoring, some foxing, and the binding a bit rubbed. Good copy.
