Fawcett was a pioneer in many different areas, including colour photography, motoring, mountaineering, aeronautics, science fiction and philosophy. He wrote a number of fantasy novels and forecast landmark military events such as an aerial bombardment of London (The Blitz) and the first fictional account of armoured fighting vehicles 20 years before the first tanks would appear in the Great War. Douglas was the brother of Colonel Percy Fawcett, who famously led an expedition into the Amazonian rainforest in search of a fabled city, but was never seen again. In the absence of facts about his demise legends quickly grew up about the man and his fate, and he was reputed to have become the model for the fictional adventurer Indiana Jones.
