On a Darkling Plain
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, (1940). First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 231 pages. Stegner's first full-length novel (after a pamphlet and two novellas), the story of a veteran of the First World War who seeks peace and healing in the wilderness of Saskatchewan. One of Stegner's least successful novels, it went out of print just 18 months after publication and has never been reissued. Yet it marks an important milestone in his career as his writing explicitly turned to an exploration of humans and nature for the first time. First edition (first printing). Near fine (some wear to the spine ends) in a very good, price-clipped dust jacket with some loss at the ends and small tape repairs on the back (verso). This is a significant association copy, inscribed 'For Carroll Coleman, with very best wishes. Wallace Stegner.' Coleman operated the Prairie Press, the publisher of Stegner's third book, The Potter's House, in 1938. Significant and early Stegner associations are very uncommon.
