Fire and Ice
Duell, Sloan and Pearce (1941), New York - An early Stegner novel, about a college student enamored with Communism and a young woman from a wealthy family, therein creating a conflict between heart and head. Colberg, Wallace Stegner: A Descriptive Bibliography A5, citing a print run of 2000 copies, with 515 sets of sheets pulped. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in a very good-looking dust jacket that appears to have been married to the book (based on a note written on the bookplate of the previous owner). The jacket is strengthened with tape on the back at the top and bottom edges. Signed by Stegner at an early date on the front free endpaper. In different ink, Wallace then added an inscription 'Postdated April 16, 1984', to the signature: 'For Maury Dunbar, who rescued it from oblivion.' It appears that Dunbar acquired the book already signed and then met Stegner, who added the inscription. Number 8 in Catalogue Twelve: Wallace Stegner, a catalog of Dunbar's extensive Stegner collection. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
