Tables of Latitudes, Longitudes by Chronometer, of Places in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans; principally on the west and east coast of Africa, the coasts of Arabia, Madagascar . from observations of H.M.S. Leven and Barracouta in . 1820 to 1826 . to which is prefixed, An Essay on the Management and Use of Chronometers, by Richard Owen.
- London, for the Hydrographical Office 1827. Quarto original blue wrappers, the front titled by hand, a more recent cloth spine; [2],36,16pp,36pp of tables,8pp of errata; the errata on paper that has browned. An excellent copy with the early stamp of the Hydrographical Office and more recent Ingleton bookplate. Some annotations, many but not all transposing the errata into the text, in an early hand. Rare and something of a landmark in navigation and the history of cartography. Owen's charts of the African and Arabian coasts were not only the most accurate to date, forming the basis of subsequent charts for generations, they were in some cases the first proper charts. The table here is to accompany the charts and to furnish "a ready means of rating chronometers on a voyage" using the rules and methods supplied here. The preliminary essay on the use of chronometers is, the author believes, the first to sufficiently lay out rules for their management and use for seamen.
