[Paris] 1894 - Lithograph in colour, (Soft folds, small tears in the folds, some light staining, otherwise in a good condition) 98 x 65,5 cm (38.6 x 25.8 inches). A large important map of Madagascar, made during the French invasion of Madagascar, a year before the capitulation of its capital Antananarivo, after which France annexed Madagascar as its colony. A very large map of Madagascar, with an in-set map of Antsiranana, was made by the Military Geographical Department was was sold with the newspaper Monde Illustré in 1894. France invaded Madagascar in 1883 in the first Franco-Hova War. In September 1895 with reinforcements from Algeria and Sub-Saharan Africa, French army bombarded the royal palace with heavy artillery, causing heavy casualties and leading Queen Ranavalona III to surrender. France annexed Madagascar in 1896 and declared the island a colony the following year. The map is rare - we could only trace four examples in the institutions worldwide.
