FIGHTING THE POLAR ICE (SIGNED)
New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. Anthony Fiala, Russell W. Porter, J.Knowles Hare. A bright, solid copy, in the original deep green cloth, of the first edition of this classic account of polar exploration and survival with a SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH by the author pasted in. Edges as issued - top edge gilt, fore and bottom edges rough trimmed. Front board blind stamp ruled and illustrated, spine gilt titled. Beautifully illustrated throughout with photographs and sketches by the author, and nine full color reproductions from paintings by Russell W. Porter and J. Knowles Hare. Photo frontispieces to introduction (Wm Zeigler) and to text (Anthony Fiala) with tissue guards intact and complete, pp xxii, 296, appendix No V (six pp un-numbered). Large fold out map tipped in at rear. Evidence of a removed bookplate or other item to front pastedown with four dried glue spots and a vertical line about 1/4 inch wide and 7 ins high where surface of paper has been lifted. Pasted-in photo (photogravure?) bears the handwritten greeting "A Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year / Anthony Fiala" all in blue ink. The image appears to have been professionally retouched to enhance contrast. Transparent tape has been added to corners and centre top and bottom of photo - which is also pasted in - below the epigraph. Map is clean, bright and complete with a 1 1/4 inch closed vertical tear along third crease line and a repaired 6 inch horizontal tear on the left side. Repair appears to have been made with Japanese paper and rice paste which has preserved paper and color. Faint foxing on map itself and a some minor but more noticeable foxing on two pages preceding map. Fiala's own account of the expedition planned and funded by William Ziegler for whom Fiala had been photographer on a previous expedition and to whom this book is dedicated, Ziegler having died just eighteen months before it's publication. The explorers never reached the North Pole, their ship America broke up and their prOvisions were lost. One of the company died before a rescue ship arrived some two years later but the rest, including Fiala, survived and returned to the U.S. Some nine years after his rescue Fiala accompanied Theodore Roosevelt on an expedition into unexplored regions of Brazil. Later in his eventful life Fiala gave illustrated lectures on these and other adventures. He is remembered as an explorer, photographer and graphic artist of considerable merit.
