A coherent and very scarce group of pamphlets on coal supplies for Edinburgh, or Auld Reekie (Old Smoky) as it was known, whose domestic coal fires notoriously covered the city in dirty black soot. Henry Steuart was Sir Henry Seton Steuart, Bart., (1759-1836), landowner, agriculturist and arboriculturist, who advocated the construction of a canal from the Lanarkshire coalfields to Edinburgh in order to cheapen and improve the coal supply to the city.
