Dr. Andrew Coventry was the first professor of agriculture at Edinburgh University (1790-1831) and frequently arbitrated on land questions. Although a medical doctor by training Andrew Coventry had inherited an estate of Shanwell, near Kinross, and other property in Perthshire, and he came to be regarded as the main authority on agriculture in Scotland. 'Although it was not possible to graduate with a degree in agriculture, Coventry had attracted classes varying in number from 30 to 78. Towards the end of his tenure of office, however, he appears to have lectured only in alternate years. In 1830 the royal commission recommended that the chair of agriculture should be abolished, unless the subject could be taught regularly. Coventry therefore resigned'. [Ernest Clarke rev. Anne Pimlott Baker in ODNB]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
