The Scottish Ga?l; or Celtic Manners, as Preserved Among the HighlandersBeing an Historical Account and Descriptive Account of the Inhabitants, Antiquities, and National Peculiarities of ScotlandIn Two Volumes
London - Smith-Elder & Co, 1831 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. A highly detailed set of historical and descriptive accounts on the inhabitants, antiquities, and national customs of Scotland. First edition. Adorned with beautiful hand-coloured plates. Collated complete with a frontispiece to each volume, an additionalfive hand-coloured plates, one monochrome plate, six leaves of sheet music, and numerous other illustrations throughout the text. The work was hugely popular and when originally published it was priced at a high price of fourteen guineas, one bookseller stated; We had some idea that fourteen guineas might perhaps be a mistake -four guineas being more probably meant. We have it, however, on the most undoubted authority that fourteen guineas, and no less, really was the publishing price ; and that, even at that money, several hundred copies were sold within three months of the date of publication. Complete in two volumes. Condition: Uniformly rebound in half crushed morocco bindings, with cloth covered boards, and gilt detailing to the spines. Externally, both volumes are rubbed to the spines and extremities, with some wear to the leather. Some denting to the tail of the front board to volume two. Front joint is starting to volume two. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound and bright throughout. With intermittent spotting and offsetting to the title pages. Some library ink stamps throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD, a nice bright set..
