When She Was About Sixteen.
(Indianapolis) Bobbs Merrill (1911) Small quarto. First edition. Illustrated with reproductions of drawings by Howard Chandler Christy, an American illustrator best known for his patriotic portraits of military men and romantic depictions of society women. The illustrations accompany a story in verse by the American poet James Whitcomb Riley. Printed on heavier paper, with borders in peach around the text and some of the illustrations, and peach highlights to the black & white plates. The illustrations are lovely, soft and sentimental, depicting scenes of family and society life. Bound in olive green cloth, with a large, full-color pictorial label to the front cover, reproducing a painting by Christy, and titling in gilt. Extremely fine and bright, with only one small, slight indentation to the rear cover. In the rare original box, with a pictorial design to the front cover, which has some edgewear, split corners, and a light spot of soiling to the lid. Being kept in the box, this copy is in uncommonly fine condition.
