Spine lightly sunned, faint rubbing to corners of boards and spine tips, top edge a little dusty. Several pages with marginal annotations in grey and blue pencil. Errata slip tipped-in facing p. vi. A very good copy in the rubbed, toned and chipped jacket, with some faint finger marks to the front panel and two removed tape repairs to the verso. Black and white frontispiece. First edition, first impression, of this scholarly edition of the Middle English alliterative romance. The text is reproduced from the original 14th-century manuscript (now held as part of the Cotton Library at the British Library) with copious notes, details and glossaries by Tolkien and Gordon.
