London Septimus Prowett 1827 Two large octavo (7-1/4" x 10-1/2") volumes bound in contemporary dark green morocco leather with gilt rules on the covers, gilt rules and lettering on the spine, all edges gilt. Illustrated with 24 engraved mezzotint plates by John Martin, tissue guards intact. A high point of British book illustration, Martin's attempts to make Darkness visible are monuments to the visionary strain of Romantic art. Owner inkstamp of R. B. Patterson, Edgehill House, Langside, on front endpaper of each volume; neat owner signature of Sarah Elizabeth Atkin dated 1833 on front blank of the first volume. Light to moderate foxing. Short split at the bottom of the front hinge of the first volume. A Near Fine set of this beautifully illustrated edition of this classic work
