London: printed by C. Roworth for Benjamin and John White 1795 - 8vo., xi + (1) + 215 + (1)pp., including the half-title and with the errata on verso of p.xi, closed tear in one leaf (no loss of surface), bound in early 20th century green half calf, neatly rebacked, gilt and lettered, top edge gilt, others uncut. An excellent, crisp, copy, with the early 20th century armorial bookplate of William Henry Mason.> Second edition. Henrey 1034. Mason's anonymously published Essay on Design in Gardening>, first published in 1768 as a slight pamphlet of a mere 54 pages, 'intended to supplement the 'unconnected thoughts on gardening' in Shenstone's Works> (vol.2, 1764), shows familiarity with gardens in many parts of England, but refers to his own practice only in general terms. Its main theoretical concern is to draw a line between desirable contrast and undesirable incongruity. . In 1795 he published a revised and greatly enlarged edition (of the Essay>), in which he now disparaged the gardening theories of Thomas Whately and Uvedale Price. Whately was dead but Price hit back in the second edition of his Essay on the Picturesque> (1796-8), to which Mason responded testily in 1798 with two appendices to his own Essay>'. [James Sambrook in ODNB]. Mason's is, however, an acutely observed essay in which he not only reviews both the early and the contemporary literature of gardening, but also comments on estates laid out in the new style, amongst them Philip Southcote's Woburn Farm (now St. George's College, Weybridge), where Southcote devised his 'ferme ornée' style of garden; Charles Hamilton's Painshill, near Cobham, and William Pitt's Enfield Chase, in Middlesex.
