Tan dust jacket has chips to tips of browned and rubbed spine, horizontal spine tear; panels have small chips at outer corners, some browning; split front flap internally repaired with clear archival paper tape; good, flap price intact. Tipped in is a short Autograph Note Signed: "To my dear Dada, without whose unfailing help and encouragement this book would never have been written. With my respect and my love, Aubrey. Amalfi. Feb. 18. 1952". The printed dedication reads "This first work of my maturity is for my mother and my father". Menen's father was Kali Narain Menon. Though not indicated in any way, this copy came from the library of noted Canadian author and film maker Ted Allan. "The story is laid in a small village in postwar Italy. The plot revolves around the adoption by the Duke of Gallodoro of his presumed bastard son, a street urchin who has devoted most of his tender years to becoming the best thief in the village...Under these circumstances, as a base, Mr. Menen sallies forth in all directions, wielding a wicked lance at the foibles of our time. He jousts with hypocrisy, pomposity, cynicism, morals, politics, and philosophy. " - jacket flap. Signed or inscribed books by the Indian-Irish author are uncommon in the market. Binding: Hardcover .
