, 1903. 1903. A Novel. London: Smith, Elder, & Co., 1903. 8 pp undated ads. Original blue cloth stamped in white. First Edition, believed to have consisted of 2,000 copies (which may have included sheets for Bell's colonial edition). This was Conrad and Hueffer's second collaboration (after THE INHERITORS), and it was not welcomed with open arms by publishers. Attempts to have it serialized were abandoned after a year of effort, and a publisher for the book form was found only after the authors agreed to remove "pretty nearly half of the book."~This is a bright, very good-plus copy, with a few small marks on the rear cover, and the remnants of a small label on the title page (not affecting print); there is very little wear, and -- atypically -- the thick wove paper does NOT exhibit foxing and the white pigment on the front cover has NOT flaked away. Unlike the American edition, which is fairly common, this is a rather scarce book -- especially in nice condition; Smith, Elder did not spend much to produce this book -- which is probably why Conrad never asked them to produce another. Cagle A9a.
