1495 Isocrates Laudibus Helenae Greek Orations Incunabula + Herodotus Histories
[Venice : Christophorus de Pensis, de Mandello, ca. 1498]; [after 1494, not after 1500]. Folio. - 1495 Isocrates Laudibus Helenae Greek Orations Incunabula + Herodotus Histories EXCEEDINGLY RARE & Important Complete FOLIO “It is more important to know where you are going than to get there quickly. Do not mistake activity for achievement.” – Isocrates An exceedingly rare incunable printing of Isocrates’ ‘Orations on Helena’ which also contains Herodotus’s ‘Historiae’. Isocartes was a 4th-century BC Greek orator and rhetorician, whose philosophical thought helped influence various Panegyrics of the Renaissance. This particular oration is known to support Isocrates’ desire not to invite foreigners to learn Greek or become assimilated with the Athenian culture. The BMC lists Johannes Petrus Lucensis as the translator of this work. Along with the ‘Histories’ of Herodotus, this book includes annotations in the margins. While the post-incunable Aldus printing of Herodotus is more well-known, this printing is desirable simply by being a pre-Aldus printing of a classic, famous work. It is one of the earliest accounts of the rise of the Persian Empire and the conflicts between Persians and Athenians. This 15th-century edition was translated by Laurentius Valla and edited by Antonius Mancinellus. While the dating of this printing is uncertain, accounts such as Goldschmidt’s “First Cambridge Press” claim it to be as early as 1495.
