Vegetius a Roman writer about whom very little is known wrote his classic work originally called Epitoma Rei Militaris in the fifth century. The material, on military matters, is chiefly borrowed from earlier authorities and Vegetius is the only extant source for much that his work contains. It was first published in Utrecht in 1475 and was frequently reprinted and translated into modern languages. The work is divided into 5 books: 1. On the levying and training of recruits; 2. On the legion, its organisation, rank of officers and men, and their arms; 3. On tactics, the last chapter of this book consisting of thirty-two maxims of war; 4. On fortification and the attack and defence of places; on machines of war; 5. On the navy. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE, FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. POSTAGE AT COST.
