Johannes Jansson, Arnhem 1617 - copper engraved map; overall 17 x 21 cm; plate 13,5 x 17,5 cm. slightly toned; some off-set; edges slightly browned; 2 small rust spots; o/w vg cond. Original antique map from G.A.Magini's atlas 'Geographiae, tum veteris, tum novae, volumina duo.', published by J.Jansson in Arnhem, 1617. Text in Latin. This atlas combined 2 volumes in one and contains maps both of the ancient World according to Ptolemy and the modern World. This map shows ancient Sri Lanka according to Claudius Ptolemy c100 AD - c170 AD) who was Greek writer, mathematician, astronomer, geographer, astrologer and poet. Ptolemy maps are maps known to the Hellenistic society in the 2nd century AD. They are based on the description contained in Ptolemy's book Geography, written c. 150. On verso pagination 27. Iconic map of Sri Lanka with the elephant.
