[WINE] Le vin de France
Paris : Jouvet & Cie., n.d. [circa 1895]. Second edition. Octavo, contemporary quarter green calf over marbled papered boards (lightly rubbed, corners bumped), spine with raised bands and gilt decoration and lettering, 302 pp (clean and sound), maps and tables. In addition to constituting an encyclopaedic survey of French wines, the relatively recent success of Australian wines at the 1889 Paris Exposition prompted Mayet to include a section on Australian wines. In Mayet's opinion, Australian wines are superior in quality to the majority of their competitors. The short account takes the form of a description of a wine tasting in a French restaurant ('the field of combat'), in which the author, along with Prince Galitzine and an Australian, judge the relative qualities of Australian wines and their French counterparts. Scarce. Unrecorded in Australian collections.
