Small collection of material relating to 'Music Today', comprising two advertisements, the programme for the inaugural concert, and a Typed Letter Signed from Hamilton to V. W. A. Conn, with the autograph draft of Conn's letter to Hamilton.
All items dating from 1960 - For more information relating to this influential series of concerts, see 'Pursuit: The Uncensored Memoirs of John Calder' (2001). Seven items, including two duplicates. Text of all items clear and complete. In fair condition, but with one side of a duplicate advertisement heavily sunned (see below). ONE: Typed Letter Signed ('Ian Hamilton') from Hamilton to Conn (husband of the poet Jeanne Conn), 12 February 1960. 4to, 1 p. Eighteen lines. Responding to Conn's criticisms, explaining reasons for cutting short discussion and cancelling part of the programme, and giving future plans. TWO: Unsigned draft (8vo, 2 pp) of letter, 9 February 1960, to which One was the reply. With corrections. THREE: Advertisement (landscape 8vo, 2 pp, on pink paper), with duplicate, for the first two concerts, 8 February and 14 March 1960. Statement of aims and other details on second page. The first concert featured Schoenberg's 'Verklärte Nacht', Boulez's 'Le Marteau sans Maître' (with 'illustrated introduction' and 'public discussion') and 'Readings from a new "novel" by Samuel Beckett'. Performers were the Morley Quartet and the New Music Ensemble (the latter featuring Cornelius Cardew). FOUR: Mimeographed typed programme (8vo, 1 p) for the 'Inaugural Concert', containing the following: 'Unfortunately, SAMUEL BECKETT has not yet completed the sections of his new "novel" from which readings are advertised in tonight's concert. These will be presented at our third concert on 5 APRIL, and will be read by PATRICK MAGEE. | Tonight we are pleased to be able to present translations - by JONATHAN GRIFFIN - of poems by RENÉ CHAR. These will be read by HAROLD PINTER.' FIVE: Advertisement (landscape 8vo, 2 pp, on brown paper), with sunned duplicate, for the third and fourth concerts. Details on second page as Three. The third concert features 'Readings from a new "Novel" of SAMUEL BECKETT read by Patrick Magee', and the fourth, 'Readings from the works of BRECHT read by Sam Wanamaker'.
