1617 Fulke Rhemish Bishops BIBLE Douai Rheims + Defense of Scripture HUGE FOLIO
London: Printed for John Bill, 1617. [A variant of the edition with John Bills name in the imprint, (printed by [Adam Islip] for Thomas Adams)] - STC - 1617 Fulke Rhemish Bishops BIBLE Douai Rheims + Defense of Scripture HUGE FOLIO An exceedingly rare, 17th-century printing of the Rhemish New Testament, with commentary of William Fulke. (Lowndes, 845) Originally appearing in 1586, this work by William Fulke was reissued in 1601 and again, as the present copy, in 1617 in folio. According to Thomas Horne in ‘Manual of Biblical Bibliography,’ “this elaborate work [is] a valuable piece of antient controversy and criticism, full of sound divinity, weighty arguments, and important observations; would the young student be taught to discover the very sinews of popery, and be enabled to give an effectual blow to that complication of errors, I scarce know a treatise better calculated for the purpose.” (Horne, 89). William Fulke’s version of the Rheims text and the Bishops editions of the New Testaments, appears here with annotations and his own counter-arguments. (Moyise, 63). The Douai version and the Bishops' Bible version in parallel columns, with Fulke's commentary at the end of each chapter. The Douai version is translated from the Vulgate chiefly by Gregory Martin; the Bishops' Bible translation was overseen by Matthew Parker. Item number: #583 Price: $2500 FULKE, William The text of the New Testament of Iesus Christ, translated out of the vulgar Latine by the papists of the traiterous seminarie at Rhemes. With arguments of bookes, chapters, and annotations, pretending to discouer the corruptions of diuers translations, and to cleare the controuersies of these dayes. Whereunto is added the translation out of the original Greeke, commonly vsed in the Church of England, with a confutation of all such arguments, glosses, and annotations, as conteine manifest impietie, of heresie, treason, and slander, against the catholike Church of God, and the true teachers thereof, or the translations vsed in the Church of England. The whole worke, perused and enlarged in diuers places by the authors owne hand before his death, with sundrie quotations, and authorities out of Holy Scriptures, counsels, fathers, and historie, more amply then in the former editions.
