The life and adventures of an eccentric traveller. With engravings.
York: printed for the author by M. W. Carrall 1818 - 8vo, (4) + iv + 105 + (1)pp, two whole-page woodcut plates and six smaller woodcuts in the text, original boards, rebacked, entirely uncut. A very good copy. First edition. A charming curiosity, with numerous eccentric but at times delightful vignettes of high and low life. Thus he writes of 'gold': 'In all countries, gold seems to be a traveller, a certain and undeniable talisman, that opens all the avenues which lead either to pleasure or information, and is more sure in its operation, than patience itself. Money will most infallibly extract sincerity from a Frenchman, open the door of hospitality from a Dutchman, and even make a Spanish Don familiar and obliging; this score it behoves everyone who has a penchant for travelling, to line his pocket well with this necessary evil.' And of a gang of gypsies: 'Asses, mules, dogs, tinkers' tools, and potcrates, formed the chief assemblage of this noisy set, amongst which also appeared ragged women, and climbing boys with brushes in their hands, emblems of their trade .'. The woodcut frontispiece is a delightful view of The Travellers' Embarkation for the Continent>, showing a relevant dockside scene. The identity of the author is vague. He tells us that he was born in York in June 1756, his father being 'an eminent professional gentleman . who supported a numerous family by his medical abilities'. Educated by Jesuits in Flanders, Charles returned home in 1777 and eventually became a country apothecary. Of course, the whole thing may actually be fiction. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
