[Original Art]: The People Show Present No. 13 Golden Slumbers
[circa 1967]. Original poster maquette. Measuring 20.5" x 30.5". Various colored inks on green construction paper. Some fading light fading, name on verso, and a tear at the corner repaired with tape, else near fine. A poster from an unknown designer for People Show No. 13 Golden Slumbers. The People Show was an experimental art theater group formed in December of 1966 and based out of the London basement of Better Books, which itself was affiliated with the underground newspaper International Times. This hand-drawn poster is for performances in July and August with no year given. If the shows followed chronological and numerical conventions, the poster is likely from 1967. "Golden Slumbers" consisted of Laura Gilbert walking around naked except for fishnet stocking and a rose taped to her stomach while Syd Palmer lay naked under a sheet pleasuring himself, and Mark Long and John Darling, sticking their heads through holes in the backdrop, commented on the proceedings.Jeff Nuttall, a founder of The People Show, described the group in his book Bomb Culture as a "...theatre group who combine techniques from music hall, happening, straight drama, cabaret, funhouse, and children's party, [who] sometimes ventured out of their domain in Better Books [sic] basement to perform at UFO." And in his book London Calling, Barry Miles says for one event the basement of was divided up by cardboard with "Nuttall's fat beer belly protruding through a large circular hole, one of Laura's breasts through another, smaller hole, Mark's feet stuck out through a hole at the bottom of the third alcove." We've only heard of one other printed poster, in the same hand and lavish psychedelic style, for a performance of No. 4 with Yoko Ono's Bottoms film in 1967. This original maquette comes from the estate of Bob Cobbing, concrete and visual poet, and manager of Better Books.
